Symptoms of Bad Breath That You Should Look Out For

You might find it difficult to think of symptoms of bad breath; after all, if you have bad breath then that's symptom enough, right?  You may even be fully aware of your problem with bad breath, if it's been pointed out to you or if you've even been able to tell for yourself that you have halitosis.  But there are some other bad breath symptoms that you should be aware of since many also signal problems with digestion or in the mouth itself.

Let's cover some of these more serious symptoms of bad breath so that you know what to look out for.

For one thing most of these symptoms signal digestive disorders.  When the stomach is overloaded or is struggling to digest something difficult such as spicy food, meat, or dairy product then it typically produces far too much acid than it needs to.  This acid is regurgitated back up the esophagus and is expelled through the mouth, producing many symptoms of bad breath.

Very often those who have chronic bad breath also report problems such as acid reflux disease, constant indigestion, and other discomfort with eating and digestion.  While occasional indigestion or sour stomach is not unusual, when you have chronic and consistent symptoms of bad breath and upset stomach, it's time to make some changes to one's diet or to see a doctor.

When acid is regurgitated back up into the esophagus is can cause a lot of damage to the esophagus itself as well as to the throat and mouth.  The stomach has a special lining to protect it from this acid but other parts of the body do not.  Often one's symptoms of bad breath signal damage being done to the esophagus or other delicate areas.

To address these serious symptoms of bad breath, it's good to make some changes to one's diet rather than to eat whatever you want and then rely on antacids and other treatment options.  When you have too many antacids and remedies you can upset the balance of acid in your system and cause more damage than before.

It's also true that once you start to feel the pain of indigestion and these other symptoms of bad breath that some injury has already occurred.  It's like putting a bandage on a cut - you've already hurt yourself and rather than rely on bandage after bandage, you might want to think about protecting yourself better from those cuts in the first place!

Such symptoms of bad breath may mean that you need to cut back on some of your favorite foods or cut back on the amount of food you eat in one sitting, but protecting yourself and your digestive health of course makes it worthwhile.  You can also be sure that you drink plenty of water when you eat and afterwards as well; water helps to break down food and also aids the body in digestion.  This too can help with the symptoms of bad breath and can keep you healthy at the same time.

Other important and noteworthy symptoms of bad breath can include just what the breath smells like as well.  If you notice that you have "coffee breath" then of course this is just due to your recent cup of java, but other odors on the breath can be the result of what you're eating and drinking.  If you notice a sour taste and smell to your breath, this too can signal digestive disorders.  When your symptoms include acrid smells this can mean your stomach acids are being regurgitated.

Other indications could be the result of an overly dry mouth.  Some people have dry mouth just due to their genetics but often dry mouth is a symptom of another problem.  Many people are dehydrated because of not getting enough water and because of getting too much caffeine in what they drink.

Some might also their dry mouth and symptoms of bad breath when they are taking certain medications.  Many medications have dry mouth as a side effect.  If you notice that your mouth is very dry either because you're taking medication or not, you might want to think about drinking more water, cutting back on the caffeine, or getting a topical treatment.

There are many sprays and drops you can purchase at the pharmacy without a prescription that will treat these symptoms of bad breath.  Usually they contain certain oils that simply coat the inside of the mouth and teeth.  Chewing sugarless gum also helps as this stimulates the production of saliva.

There are of course many homeopathic remedies to address the symptoms of bad breath if you need something a bit stronger but aren't ready to take prescription medications.  Things like fennel, silica, and bee pollen all work to settle the stomach and to neutralize excessive acid.  You can even use parsley to settle your stomach as well; the next time you get parsley on your plate as a garnish, try chewing it after your meal rather than ignoring it!  It settles your stomach and neutralizes those symptoms of bad breath at the same time.  Peppermint leaves do the same.  Not only does peppermint help to settle the stomach but of course it has a much better odor than that bad breath!

Constant and chronic symptoms of bad breath may require a doctor's attention.  If you're suffering from serious indigestion you may need prescription medication to get it to stop.  Your doctor can also make sure any damage done to your mouth and throat is being treated as well.  Extreme symptoms of bad breath can also be treated with a doctor's care; there are prescriptions that can offset the bad odor as well.  And if you're experiencing dry mouth because of a prescription medication then your doctor may need to adjust your dosage, and you should let him or her know about any other oral treatments you're trying for your symptoms of bad breath.
