Hellish Halitosis What You Can Do When all Else Fails

We have all recognized that at some point we have bad breath.  Sometimes just a quick brushing or mouthwash can help stop it.  But in some cases, we don't have the option available to us.  There are plenty of other ways to fight halitosis beyond the traditional methods.

If you happen to be the person with bad breath (halitosis), after you've tried the usual recommendations, you might see some reduction in bad breath.  But it is not uncommon for these remedies to last only for a short time.  Some remedies, while out of the ordinary, may provide even better reductions in bad breath. If you are suffering, why not give some of these a try to reduce you bad breath (halitosis)?

Top Vitamins and Minerals To Eliminate Bad Breath :

  • Vitamins A, B, B3 - these can help stop bad breath
  • Vitamin C and Bioflavonoid - these are a remedy for bleeding gums
  • Folic Acid - this can enhance regrowth of gum tissue
  • Zinc - will help remove existing odors
  • Amino Acids - Glysine helps correct any amino acid imbalance which is causing bad breath smell
  • Acidophilus - helps to improve digestion, and thus helps to remove bad breath

You can also try brushing your teeth with a combination of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide . You will feel the hydrogen peroxide bubbling in your mouth, because it is adding oxygen. This is a useful treatment, because by adding oxygen, this can kill the anaerobic bacteria thriving in the mouth environment where there is no oxygen.  If you don't happen to have access to hydrogen peroxide, even just a simple swish and spit with plain water can help, by loosening any food particles that remain stuck in the teeth after a meal.  However baking soda can be so effective, many toothpastes now contain baking soda as an ingredient.

Another good idea might be to try an electric or battery-powered toothbrush or water pick. When using a water pick, the jets of water help blast any food particles from their hiding place between teeth.  This can be effective in getting the food out from hard to reach spots, and acts as a supplement to flossing. Be sure to continue flossing though, even if you do use a water pick.

You diet will also have an impact on a halitosis condition.  Eating a diet low in calories has a beneficial effect on the breath, but eating a diet high in calories or with a lot of fatty foods will have a negative effect on your breath. By eating a low fat diet, you will improve not just our breath but your overall health. When eating low fat, be sure to include lots of fruits and vegetables which are high in fiber and the acids that that help to reduce bacteria.

A great type of diet for reducing bad breath (halitosis) is eating a vegan diet.  Following a vegan diet means that absolutely no animal products are consumed, whether fat or protein, even avoiding dairy products.  Vegetarians which avoid meat and fish, can be a little more flexible than vegans, because many vegetarians also eat cheese, milk and eggs.

A vegetarian diet is still low in both trans and saturated fat and cholesterol.  Vegetarians and vegans have much more fiber in their diet than a non-vegetarian. Because of this low fat,  high fiber diet, vegetarians are much less likely to have halitosis. Most often, bad breath is caused by the bacteria produced by decomposing protein food waste, especially meats.  Therefore anyone eating a primarily a vegetarian diet, with their high fruit and vegetable content) will as a result have much less likelihood of chronic bad breath compared with people eating daily diets that are high in protein foods.

Yet another option is a mouth oxygenator to treat bad breath (halitosis).  An oxygenator works by adding oxygen to the mouth where it kills off the bacteria in your mouth responsible for the sour odors.  Much of the bacteria causing these odors are anaerobic, which means they cannot live in the presence of oxygen. By adding oxygen to the environment where these bacteria live, it will reduce the quantity of bacteria in your mouth.

For anyone suffering from constant and chronic bad breath, who may have tried the traditional methods, it's a god idea to review your diet.  By modifying your diet and also adding vitamins and supplements to your daily routine, you can add important nutrients to your overall health plan, and help combat bad breath. If nothing you seem to do helps your problem though, be sure to visit your dentist immediately, and get qualified professional advice on how you can best fight halitosis.
