 If you've been to the pharmacy lately, you may be wondering if you can really treat bad breath with hydrogen peroxide, since there are so many toothpastes and mouth rinses that advertise having this product to do just that. It may seem strange that the harsh liquid you put on cuts - and that stings so bad - can be useful in curing bad breath. But does it really work, and how? Is it worth investigating whether or not you can treat bad breath with hydrogen peroxide, or is this just more hype from the mouth care industry?
Using Hydrogen Peroxide
One thing that's very important to remember when considering whether or not you can treat bad breath with hydrogen peroxide is that you do not want to use the liquid that you buy separately at the pharmacy. That type of hydrogen peroxide that you use to treat cuts and other wounds is of a much stronger concentration than what's in toothpastes. Using that strength to rinse out your mouth is going to cause major tooth and gum damage.
It may seem like an obvious thing to say, but some people do fall victim to the mentality that is a little bit of something is good, then more must be better. If a little bit of hydrogen peroxide in a toothpaste is good, then a higher concentration must be better for them, but this just isn't the case. Never use hydrogen peroxide liquid.
How Hydrogen Peroxide Works
Most cases of bad breath are caused by germs, plaque, and bacteria lingering in the mouth. Bacteria of course always have a foul odor. Many believe that you can treat bad breath with hydrogen peroxide because it treats these bacteria and kills the germs. It also seems to work in this regard because it penetrates the areas within the teeth where these germs breed and that can't quite be reached with a toothbrush. Brushing with a toothpaste that has hydrogen peroxide in it allows that element to permeate all these areas of the mouth to destroy all those bad breath germs.
Many people who have tried to treat bad breath with hydrogen peroxide toothpaste have reported good results, at least as compared to regular toothpastes. If you have a tendency toward bad breath, you may very well want to give one of these hydrogen peroxide toothpastes a try.
