You'll find a huge number of cures for bad breath on the market today, and even over the Internet. To try to figure out which cures really work and which ones don't, you should start with a clear understanding of the causes of bad breath. While it might sound like you need some kind of technical knowledge to understand, it's actually quite simple.
First, you should understand that when problem bad breath is discussed, we are really referring to the chronic bad breath problem known as halitosis. This is different from common forms of bad breath that everyone can experience in the morning upon waking up, or a few hours after eating something strong with garlic, vinegar or other spices at a meal.
These types of breath problems eventually go away after a few hours, and is not chronic in nature. With morning breath, the problem arises mainly because your body produces less saliva while asleep, and saliva is one of the ways our bodies process bacteria in the mouth. And when you eat strongly flavored or spiced foods, the only way to avoid bad breath is to avoid those foods! Usually it is food with a high sulphur content, such as onion, garlic, cabbage and cured meats, that can cause problems after they are eaten.
Long term problems with bad breath can be the result of many factors, which mostly involve poor oral hygiene. Some other causes may be stomach or digestive disorders (which may be caused by diet or stress); bowel problems; sinus infection and the post nasal drip that comes from infection; or using alcohol or tobacco.
Correcting poor oral hygiene is the best place to begin with finding a cure. Dentists agree that the oral hygiene practices below are a good way to prevent gum disease and bad breath:
- Be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly along the gum line at least twice a day, using a toothpaste which contains fluoride.
- Every time you brush your teeth, clean the surface of your tongue by brushing with your toothbrush or using a tongue scraper.
- Be sure to floss twice a day to remove food and tartar from between your teeth.
- Each time you brush, use an antiseptic mouthwash which does not contain alcohol. Rinse for thirty seconds before spitting it out.
- For denture wearers, remove your dentures at night, brush them thoroughly and soak them overnight using a special disinfecting solution.
- If you are wearing removable braces, be sure to remove them and clean them properly at the times recommended by your dentist or orthodontist.
- Make regular visits your dentist for a checkup and to have your teeth cleaned professionally. Dental problems such as gum disease and cavities or abscesses are frequently the causes of bad breath.
Below are some additional remedies that have been known to be successful for countering bad breath.
- Drink between six and eight 8-oz. glasses of water each day. This will help to keep your mouth and throat moist which helps your saliva to do it job to kill bacteria. It can also help digestion and prevent constipation or other problems.
- Combine baking soda and water with a splash of 3% hydrogen peroxide to make your own toothpaste. An example of another toothpaste recipe is mixing powdered cloves with water, or even mixing water with myrrh.
- If you suffer from sinus trouble, use a saline and water nasal wash every day to keep your sinus passages clear, or get a recommendation for a steroid nasal spray from your doctor.
- For dieters on low-carbohydrate diets, bad breath can be the result of eating too few carbs, and denying your body of what it needs for fuel. Try adding more carbs to your meals to help.
- You can make a non-alcoholic mouthwash solution by mixing half water, half of 3% hydrogen peroxide. You might also try adding whole or ground cloves to tea, straining the mixture, and rinsing with the solution.
- Add fruits and vegetables to your diet, which have enzymes to aid the digestive process.
- Eat plain yogurt each day to help digestion.
- Be sure to take a complete daily multi vitamin, as vitamin deficiencies can cause bad breath trouble.
By following these recommended bad breath cures, you can reduce or eliminate bad breath trouble.
