The Most Common Causes of Bad Breath in Children

Children bad breathMost parents get very worked up when they notice that their children are showing bad breath. They tend to think that there is a problem somewhere when in fact most children do have bad breath, especially in the morning. The most common causes for halitosis in children are not that worrying. However, it is highly important that when the condition persists, parents should contact the family doctor for a check up.

Causes of bad breath
Bad breath in children can be caused by non-oral sources, oral sources and even psychological problems. In around 85 percent of individuals, halitosis will appear as an oral source. The areas usually affected are the back of the tongue, the area between teeth and under the gum line.

As with adults, bad breath in children tends to appear in a relationship with the tongue. This part of our body is covered by a layer of shed epithelial cells, bacteria and blood cells. Just so that you can get an idea of how massive the problem can be, you should know that one oral epithelial cell can be a perfect home for more than 100 bacteria. The worst bad breath will appear when shed oral epithelial cells end up stuck in plaque and crevices located on the dorsum area of the tongue.

Most children will experience morning bad breath. This is because when sleeping saliva is not produced anymore and the muscles of the mouth are relaxed. As children sleep a lot they are developing areas inside their mouth that end up as saliva free, more particularly oxygen free. These areas are perfect for housing anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath with producing waste products that are actually made out of very smelly volatile sulfur compounds (also known as VSCs), which usually smell like rotten eggs.

In most cases such bad breath will only be experienced in the morning and the cure stands in a proper oral hygiene. Teaching your children to pay attention to brushing their teeth and tongue is up to you so do not neglect that. Also, do not use mouthwashes with children as they usually swallow it.

Conclusion
There are a lot of other conditions that can develop bad breath although these are the most common. Pay attention to your child’s breath and if it persists with no apparent reason be sure to contact a doctor.
