When is Bad Breath a Sign of Illness?

Bad Breath ReportIf you have chronic halitosis, there can be many reasons why.  For most people, it's simply a matter of watching what they eat and paying better attention to their oral hygiene.  Usually flossing and brushing, and using a mouthwash or rinse, will be enough to help them get their breath back to normal.  But for some, bad breath is a sign of illness, and maybe even a serious illness.  Let's talk about some of them here.

First of all, chronic and severe bad breath is a sign of illness when it's caused by such things as tooth decay.  Usually severe cases of tooth decay can be a sign of gum disease or other such problems in the mouth.  Impacted wisdom teeth can also cause bad breath.  If you have any type of mouth pain along with bad breath, you should speak to your dentist right away.  It's always better to address problems in your mouth before they progress.

For others, bad breath is a sign of illness of the digestive system.  If your body cannot break down food properly or absorb it quickly, the stomach will send poor odors back up through the throat and to the mouth.  In this case, bad breath is a sign of illness of the stomach or intestines, or may be a sign that you need to adjust your diet.  Many who follow high protein diets report cases of bad breath because their body is having a more difficult time digesting these foods on this diet.

Some have heard of other illnesses that cause bad breath; whether or not bad breath is a sign of illness in other cases depends on your health overall.  Some with diabetes or kidney failure have chronic bad breath.  Hormonal imbalances can also cause halitosis.  It's important to be familiar with symptoms of these diseases and conditions, especially if you have a family history of them.

When discussing whether or not bad breath is a sign of illness in your particular case, remember that you need to speak to your doctor or dentist to be sure.  Only he or she can perform an accurate diagnosis.  If you have chronic halitosis, you may want to make some notes regarding your case or of any other symptoms as well, and present these to your doctor as well.  Sometimes just a simple blood test is all that's needed.
