Hives (commonly known as urticaria) is a skin condition that is usually caused by an allergic reaction. This condition will create red skin welts, which can appear in any area of the body including the lips, throat, tongue and ears. These manifestations will appear varied in size and can even reach the size of a regular dinner plate. Once you get them, you will feel a constant need to scratch as they do severely itch, burn or sting.
Also, you can differentiate these welts from other possible skin conditions because of the pale border they present. In most cases the cause is direct contact with an allergenic substance or even an immune reaction of the body towards food or different possible allergens. Rashes can also appear because of cold exposure, exercise, emotional states or rubbing but these situations are rare in causes for hives.
Hives and Bad Breath
Hives is not a direct cause of bad breath. In fact, in most cases patients suffering from urticaria will not show foul mouth odors. On the other hand, when the skin welts appear on the tongue or the back of the throat, we are dealing with a situation in which halitosis can appear. In some situations, the breaking of the welts will lead to bad breath (when they are located inside the mouth or in the throat area) because they are basically wounds. This becomes the perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria to multiply and cause foul odors due to the waste products created.
Besides that, some types of hives require you to take some special medicine which can cause bad breath. If medication is the cause for bad breath, you should talk with your doctor to see if there are alternative drugs that can provide the same treatment without the side effect of foul mouth odors.
Conclusion
The link between hives and bad breath is very remote and the good news is that once urticaria is treated, you will be able to get rid of bad breath as well. If the problems continue, there is a need to consult a doctor as there is the possibility that bad breath is caused by another factor.
