Bad Breath Can Be Caused By Disease

There are a number of recognized causes for bad breath.  Among the most well known are poor oral hygiene, using the wrong type of mouthwash, and even some medicines can be the cause of bad breath.  In addition to those factors, disease can also be a contributor to bad breath.

The most common diseases that can cause bad breath include chronic sinus infection, gum disease, indigestion and liver disease, diabetes, and other problems.  A big cause of bad breath is bacteria which is found in the mouth and digestive tract.

It is possible to know when you are suffering from bad breath. Usually, you can tell by a sour taste in your mouth. Try to inhale your breath by breathing into your cupped hand, and bringing the breath to your nose to smell.  Another way to tell is to touch your wrist with your tongue, then bring your wrist to your nose to smell.  You can sometimes notice the bad odor when trying these breath tests, which alerts you that you will need to take steps right away to change your habits and improve your oral hygiene.

You can find other solutions on the market to solve bad breath problems, for example Halitonic, or you can use an herbal remedy or obtain a prescription medication from your doctor for this problem. Another option is to make your own mouthwash solution, by mixing 50% water, and 50% hydrogen peroxide together and rinsing.  This solution will kill the bacteria that can cause bad breath. Another popular remedy is standard household baking soda which can have the same effect.  Both baking soda and peroxide are often found in commercially available toothpastes.

There is a wide variety of tips for improving your health habits that can reduce and eliminate bad breath.  One of the best is to stop smoking. Not smoking will definitely improve your breath.  Another good idea is to make sure you visit your dentist regularly, to make sure you are not suffering from other conditions such as gum disease, and to fix any problems with tooth abscess, broken fillings or cracked crowns, where food can get trapped.

Another way to reduce bad breath is increase in the amount of saliva in one's mouth. For example, chewing gum or sugar-free lozenges will cause you to salivate more, and can provide a gentle fresh taste.  Sugar-free mints or other candies are also a good choice, and there are now breath strips on the market that simply melt away in your mouth.  Breath strips are strong enough to extend their effect even into your throat and stomach, so it might be good to give them a try.

When you are meeting someone for an intimate evening, plan to avoid foods that have strong flavors such as garlic or onion.  Another way to control a breath problem is to skip drinking alcohol and caffeine, as hard as that might be. Don't spend the evening being worried about your breath, but take initial steps to control the problem and you won't have to worry about whether or not someone else might be offended.

Even though you might not notice yourself that you have bad breath, you might see that other people are a little put off when coming close to you, or turning away slightly.  You might even find someone making an excuse not to kiss you, as awkward as that  might be!  No one wants to have to deal with that kind of embarrassment.  It's easy enough to remove the problem, so be sure to take reasonable actions to make sure your breath is fresh.

Some other easy ways to prevent bad breath are brushing your teeth after each mean, and being sure to floss your teeth and rinse thoroughly.  Another good idea is to brush your tongue, where tiny food particles can get lodged.  Some natural breath fresheners to consider are natural mint oil and chlorophyll.  The mint can even be combined with your usual toothpaste to provide an additional antibacterial agent.

Try to breath through your nose and not your mouth, and keep drinking plenty of water throughout the day.  When you do have water to drink, try swishing it in your mouth and around your teeth to help rinse away remaining food.

Be sure to check the Internet for much more helpful information about preventing and curing bad breath as well as the disease that can cause it.  Try searching not just for "bad breath" but also for the clinical term, “halitosis", which is the term more used by doctors.
