Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a world wide problem. It is estimated that 35 to 45 percent of people in the world suffer from chronic bad breath. As this is a huge market to cater for, it is no surprise to find that there are thousands of products out there that claim to help eliminate halitosis. Of course, not all work well.
Finding the Right Product Or Remedy
To determine which is the right product for yourself, you need to identify the root cause of your condition. Without knowing what causes your condition, you will not be able to target the problem area effectively. Hence, it is wise to sit down and go through literature or with a doctor to help you understand your condition better. Only then will be able to choose the correct product that will serve your needs. Below are some common causes of bad breath to get you started.
First Major Cause- Food
Firstly, foods that contain volatile oil are a major cause. Coupled with improper cleaning of the teeth, it just make the condition worse. Food left in the mouth breakdown and that can result in the production of foul odor in the mouth. It is a well known fact that eating onions and garlic cause your breath to smell, so in order to avoid that you can blend them instead of eating them raw. Other causes include the use of vegetables and spices. When one eats them, they are metabolized in the body and then that is absorbed in the blood and reaches the lungs. This bad breath problem resolves once the metabolites are eliminated from the body.
Second Major Cause- Poor Dental Hygiene
Dental problems also result in bad odor. If proper attention is not given to dental hygiene by brushing the teeth regularly, this will result in an incomplete removal of the food particles from the mouth and will then be acted upon by bacteria and will result in bad breath. Dry mouth is another major concern. Dry mouth is usually caused by the use of certain medications, smoking and sleeping with the mouth open. The best solution around this is to drink lots of water. People who wear dentures and do not clean them on a regular basis can have the same problem.
Third Major Cause- Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions can cause the production of bad breath. These include lung infections and lung abscesses. The odor from bad breath can also help identify as to what kind of a disease process the person might be suffering from. For example if the breath has a urine odor, then that person might be suffering from a kidney disease, whereas if one has a fishy breath then that individual most likely is suffering from liver failure.
As you can see, halitosis has many causes and it is important that you recognise the cause of your bad breath so that the appropriate follow up actions can be taken.
